| Farmhouse Kitchen in Chelsea by Plain English |
Like so many of you, I am a huge fan of traditional,
European farmhouse kitchens, and the English ones
we're touring today with their bespoke cabinetry,
understated elegance, and simple lovely design by
Plain English are sure to tug at your heartstrings.
What is it about a modern farmhouse kitchen's
design that taps into our nostalgia and emotional
longing for the cozy comforts of home?
Is it airy, understated, near-minimalism?
A grounded sensibility never showing off?
The muted color palette falling gentle on the irises?
Organic, natural materials and finishes?
Whatever the psychology, architecture, and natural sciences involved in the mix, they converge brilliantly and come alive
in the kitchen designs of Plain English, who create bespoke
kitchens by hand using traditional methods.
A Plain English kitchen is made with the best possible materials
the old fashioned way, and in plain English, a dialogue ensues
with larders, laundries, sculleries.
The company defines (and perhaps re-defines)
these living spaces by the dignity of their utility
and with a unique sense of style.
The romantic history of the 25-year old company is
fascinating as communicated by Plain English
Creative Director, Katie Fontana
and Managing Director, Tony Niblock:
“We established Plain English in 1992, first setting up shop in an old tannery and then later in a rather grand Georgian farmhouse deep in the Suffolk countryside.
As the business grew we gradually converted outbuildings, barns and stables into workshops and design studios. It’s where we still make all our cupboards and kitchens today. And it’s often the re-imagining of life in this old building in its heyday - a life of genteel and bohemian aristocracy - that frames much of the inspiration for our work.
The plain Georgian architecture, the simple domesticity and of course, a very English fascination with nature, with the weather and the seasons drifting across the landscape.
Our aesthetic references the values of the past and gently evolves to embrace the modern ways we live now.”
Bet you'll be smitten with Plain English no matter
your native tongue, so let's get on with our tour
of three beautiful modern farmhouses in England.

"Attention to detail defines a Plain English kitchen. Measured and imagined, sawn and sanded, hammered and pegged, honed and jointed, lined and waxed, polished and painted. "

"How our cupboards work and feel on the inside is as important to us as their outer appearance. Tailoring, refinement of materials and mechanical fluidity are critically considered and engineered, even when hidden from view."
