{Before and After} DIY Guest Bedroom Decor Makeover Progress

Our second home in Arizona has been
a kind of lab for me this summer...not so much
in terms of decorating, but for broader creative
expression, DIY, and artful exploration.
I spend a lot of time composing at the piano,
for example.
Yep, I have a piano here, and
it was one of the first things I bought
for the place...not a baby grand, btw.
There's a teeny budget available at
this getaway, I have to be seriously creative with
thrift store finds, neighborhood estate sales,
and serendipitous dumpster discoveries.
While the DIY fixer upper in Chicagoland definitely
feels established now and reflects a modern farmhouse
is a challenge in a different way--no structural issues to
remedy, but the task to furnish it on a budget and help
it feel personal without our things from home.

Our home has 4 bedrooms, and we are using the 4th
as a music room, and you'll see below

My husband made all the DIY plumbing pipe curtain rods
for an industrial stroke, and we added a chandelier
I forgot to photograph!

Bless, you, Craigslist piano for $300!
The sound is incredible, and my dad
transformed it with chalk paint so
I could feel completely at home at it.

In this music room/studio,
I tackled a thrifty but time consuming
DIY shabby chic daybed.
I created a twin-sized "daybed" from one
half of a hand me down bunk bed set
we painted white (shocker!).
The bunks are from a family member
living in the neighborhood.
(I'm not just thrifty, I'm tres nostalgic!)

The Ikea Hektar floor lamp adds industrial plus
Scandi-modern style...and the white quilt
is vintage.

For the other two guestrooms, we outfitted them
with queen-sized beds and linen upholstered headboards

For bedroom #1,
on the bed right now is a vintage Pottery Barn

I added two chairs snagged for just $5 each!
The first one...a Louis armchair, was found
at a neighborhood estate sale and still had

The second one...is a thrifted, vintage,
Swedish-inspired wood chair to use at the desk.

I placed a Mongstad floor mirror from Ikea
in both bedrooms for function and light.
At the aforementioned estate sale, I also
snagged some really bad art in good frames which
I simply spraypainted black and stenciled
quickly and crudely for some edginess.

above the desk, represent our eldest son's birth year...
when my heart
grew to a hundred times its previous size.

The lamp from Homegoods is one I like, but I'm
not loving it here, so it will probably mosey
and be replaced by something modern like
this lamp (which are in our Chicago living room).

Kids.
When yours is a teeny tiny budget,
you indeed spray paint a thrifted .69 plastic giraffe gold
and call it a day.

This may reflect a low low budget
and a lazy but loving decorator,
but frankly I'm okay with
how the vintage chair

tight space.

Bedroom #2 looked like this when we
bought the place:

again in our younger son's birth year, when
my life as a mom of two bloomed into
a dreamy chapter of parenthood.
I learned to love as if I couldn't be hurt,
and I laughed so hard and so much,
my abs were tiiiiiiiigggghhhhht, mama!

Above the Vittsjo desk is a quote panel I painted,
and on the desk a 1960s marble
base lamp thrifted for $7.

texture to the side table.

Secret:
The linen patchwork I created for the pillow
was born of scraps from the dining room
chairs my dad recovered for us!

Great job Michele! That Craigslist chair is a find! I bet that room took a few coats of paint to rid it of that lovely before color!!
