{Before and After} DIY Master Bedroom Decor Makeover Progress
August 27, 2017
While our DIY fixer upper in Chicagoland definitely
feels like home now and reflects our personal style,
our DIY fixer in Arizona (a second home and getaway)
is not quite there yet since it's more of a blank slate
and missing personal items, accessories, furnishings, etc.

Still...I want to share DIY decor progress we have made,
and if you missed my post showing our kitchen, you'll see
there has been quite the transformation (and without
demo and dust!). We also began adding decor
The plan:
Low cost!
Simple
Serene
European Inspired
Modern farmhouse style
Belgian linen
Custom touches
Confession:
It is not easy for a decor blogger who posts
gorgeous, mostly high-end inspirational projects
everyday to summon the courage to post personal,
mostly not high-end, real photos of DIY work.
I would much rather show you the masterfully
designed work of the lovelies who are on
their game...but the personal stories I post
are always the most popular and highly visited
so here I go again.

pennies for my work blogging.)
The first thing we did when we took possession of
this place was begin painting walls.
The creamy white color existing on three walls
of the master bedroom appealed to me, so
I searched for the most similar paint swatch
and discovered
Sherwin Williams Salute.
We covered all the walls in it for ease.
Then we addressed the lack of a door to the
bathroom in the master suite.
Here's the before (the marketing pic):
We found this modern sliding barn door at Home Depot
(similar door here) and installed it ourselves (of course!).
A similar sliding white interior barn door and hardware. |
It would have been a snap to simply paint over the
orange accent wall with a prettier, subdued color,
but I felt like the room needed more texture
so I designed this wood recessed paneled wall, and my
husband somehow executed the design
without his tools from Chicago!
I felt so bad since he could have done
this project quickly and perfectly at our
primary home with the proper tools.
Here's what the wall looked like almost completed:
My dad is a saint and helped me with
the painting!
It turned out to be a beautiful feature,
and we painted it out in the same
shade of creamy white, but it
could easily be another color...
I'm just getting started, doncha know.

Here's a white porcelain lamp for a similar monochrome look.
The union jack pillow is one I commissioned my
visiting aunt to sew with Shabby Chic Couture linen
fabrics designed by Rachel Ashwell that I
also used in the living and dining rooms.
My creative dynamo, biblical scholar aunt
and fiercely loving follower of Jesus, uncle
(who performed our marriage ceremony!)
have been my cheerleaders my entire life.
My people. |
They are so dear to me and were the first
ones to phone me back in 2008 when
I became a writer and my first article
was published in a magazine.
I'll never forget that gesture.
I'll hold these people in my heart forever.
I sewed the linen patchwork by hand, and my aunt turned it into a beautiful pillow. |
Back to pillows.
My aunt Georgann sews with this!
Singer Featherweight from the 1930's |
She is an incredible quilter and
part of a charming community of
sewers in Oklahoma.

Here is a shot of another custom pillow she
created for the sofa with the linen I love so much.

While we haven't yet upgraded the blinds that came
with the home, my husband built custom drapery
rods from plumbing pipe for every room.
In the master, I hung simple Belgian linen curtain
panels (similar fabric here) from pewter curtain rings.
Inspired by one of Jenna Sue's ideas,
I bought wood Roman numerals (Walmart or here),
painted them (Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter)
and simply let them rest above the window
(without any nails or adhesive).
The numerals represent the year we were
married (30 years this week!!!).

This is one of those rooms that you could never mess up
because it's spacious and has the most wonderful light
and desert views.

With such a tight budget and no sponsors
for this room's decor, I opted for:
inexpensive white slipcovered Tullsta chairs,
or this silver one is incredible),
porcelain lamps (similar one),
and Piu Belle coverlet and pillows.
I'll share my crafty plaster roses in another post.

Here's another pillow I adore and may try on the chairs
since it's similar but less fussy.

One of my favorite indulgences?
Breakfast in bed.
Only it's more of a habit than
an indulgence for this pajamanista.

Love Milieu! |
If you feel like you are only seeing half of the room,
that's because you are! The other side is forlorn and
ready for some love...here's the sore sight.

If I had a magic genie, this area would morph
