So much design inspiration singing in this
lovely renovation of a 60-year-young farmhouse in
Connecticut for One King's Lane president,
Debbie Propst!

pay any extra, but I'll earn a few pennies!}
Designer Nicole Fisher listened to Propst's
ideas and using curated items from OKL,
not only created a charming family home
for her boss, but an inspiring show house
you can actually visit in New Canaan!
The concept is known as
"residential retail" so customers
can see furnishings in context
and how real people use them.
It's a brilliant marketing plan
I hope more home décor brands adopt.
As a real life renovator and lover of
modern farmhouse style myself,
after glimpsing the project,
I craved "before shots" to
fully understand its evolution
so you can also check out the
before and after story here.
Turns out, this beautiful home was
well done even before the re-design...

First things first, what decorating
ideas and inspiration may we borrow from this
classic modern farmhouse to implement ourselves?
There are plenty of inspiring ideas from which to choose!
Upon closer inspection of the design,
I think what you'll discover about this
project is how much it departs from
much of the typical "modern farmhouse"
vernacular we encounter.
Sure, there are wood ceiling beams
and rustic wood flooring, but
look closer...
(And lucky for us, we can buy
all these pieces at One King's Lane!)

1.
Think Beyond Rustic Kitchen Accessories.
Open shelving is a well established feature
in farmhouse kitchens, and we are accustomed
to seeing weathered wood cutting boards and stoneware
displayed on shelves...so it's refreshing to see
the other side of rustic here.

The homeowner's collection of English silver
and lacy china marry beautifully with the
traditional bead board wall, and why
not see and use these pieces everyday?

(If this elegant look tingles your jingles,
you will LOVE this kitchen I shared.)

2.
Traditional Farm Tables Are Optional.
For many, a rustic harvest farm table
is a farmhouse kitchen staple, whether the
farmhouse design is traditional or modern.
What we see in OKL's farmhouse kitchen is not a
planked antique, but a fresh, friendly, and
contemporary 55" Charlotte round table and chairs.
The pieces for me read soft and sculptural
which you are hard pressed to achieve with
a rugged, wonky wood suite...and the circular
table lends itself to friendly family chatter.

3.
Sophisticated Yet Happy.
You can't miss the happy chic factor
in this kitchen dining area with its
cheery blue striped rug and blue barstools.
There's a lightness of spirit and color
which would be sadly absent had the designer
opted for strictly wood tone pieces
or the oft-used black and white
neutral color scheme.

4.
Sweet Symmetry.
Modern farmhouse styled rooms frequently
exhibit a laid back casual vibe, so I admire
the symmetry in this kitchen's design
with its paneled refrigerators flanking
a doorway as well as storage chests
topped with matching mirrors which
anchor the opposite end of the room.
The balance is pleasing to the eye and
does not detract from the informality
of this kitchen's farmhouse style.

5.
Wood Trim Need Not Be Bright White.
Notice in the entry area (above) and elsewhere,
this modern farmhouse's trim is painted in
a soothing, calm, and warm creamy hue.
One of my favorite design bloggers has a preference
for light grey painted trim with white walls,
and again, the takeaway is, don't be afraid
to go for a soft interesting contrast to
add character and warmth.

(I actually like this Napoleonic Blue Camille
Demilune Table more than the one shown
to accent with blue and white ginger jars like this
and to inspire a blue trim color!)

6.
New Design CAN Feel Evolved.
You will be hard pressed to find  too many
examples of newly designed
modern farmhouse living rooms on the web
which truly read "undecorated," layered,
and as if they evolved over time.
But with the proper design help and expertise,
this home proves it is indeed possible!
This living room with its gorgeous
rosy linen sofa looks collected, effortless,
live-able, and anything but showoffy...
just what one desires in a modern farmhouse
designed for living!

7.
Modern Farmhouse Whimsy.
Many folks who love farmhouse style
are crazy about their antique fleamarket finds and
repurposed vintage items, and those items
frequently add whimsy; but there's another option
available: contemporary pieces with personality.
I absolutely love that Debbie Propst put sweet
buttercreamy alligators front and center
on her dining table.
For me, they conjure up Izod polos from my
glory days in the preppy 80's,
and for you, quite possibly something else.
My point is, you don't have to schlep
through markets and antique malls for 5 years
to score the perfect "whimsical accent" for
your dining room if you don't feel like it.
Tomorrow is not promised.
Sometimes it makes sense to look the other way!
Look at what's brand new, happy,
one-off, and in stock
at this very moment.

8.
King Sized & Skirted Tables.
What an unexpected surprise to see the
side tables in this charming sitting room.
I don't think we see either of these options
in too many modern farmhouses so it
feels fresh, unique, and personal.
The function of the enormous
Faded Burl Table
may at first not strike you,
but consider that the family
who uses this room has a toddler and
preschooler who use the table to
play with toys and draw!
Also consider how this table
lends itself for serving cocktails
and snacks when entertaining.
In designland, we see more slipcovered parson-style
dining chairs and sofas than you can shake a
stick at, but we don't see often enough how
lovely fabric can be introduced with
table skirts and slips...I'm totally a fan for how this
design choice made room for another pattern
to be introduced into the layered room.

  1. Love everything you share. Thank you! Any idea what the wall and trim colors are in the picture of the foyer with the strip rug and table. Looks like light grey trim but would love to know the color of both the walls and trim.
