Sarah Richardson {25 Farmhouse & Cottage Ideas}

January 12, 2016

As a huge Sarah Richardson fan,
I see genius everywhere in her designs.
(See the whole collection of lovely posts right here.)

1. Creative Kitchens
Think beyond galley and monstrous islands.
(The kitchen above is actually a split design
and so seamless in this great room/dining space.)

2. Marshmallow clouds.
Spaces can be deliciously white
without being hands-off.

3. Petite Peninsulas.
Teeny-chic and functional.

4. Penny tiles from heaven.
Make a wall look like a million bucks.

5. Bedroom office.
Make it pretty!

6. A Soft Landing.
Paint your entry a color that makes you smile.

7. Rustic Cabinet & Marble.
So much more interesting to see this
re-purposed piece placed on this mosaic
rather than distressed hardwood.

8. Coffee Bedside Table.
A petite bench or table does double duty.

9. Supersized Coffee.
A roomy surface here holds plates
of appetizers or kids' homework.

10. Lantern magic.
They just scream farmhouse charm.

11. Sophisticated storage.
Just think of the space for products and linens!

12. Blue+White=Timeless.
On the sea or not, it will not fail you.

13. Symmetry in small spaces.
Cottage charm doesn't have to spell
random and mismatched.

14. Unexpected color.
Forego the predictable fancy chrome stool.

15. Numerical bath towel monograms.
Smart AND sweet.

16. Tone down the orange.
Knotty pine can be cringe-worthy...
ashy paint or stain to the rescue.

17. The Fishy Bureau.
A simple stencil, perhaps?

18. Midcentury goes cottage.
Proves the era doesn't necessarily get the last word.

24. Two doors are cuter than one.
Especially when painted raspberry.

Bless you, darling.

  1. Michele so much inspiration, I am sure you used a lot of this to inspire your beautiful cottage I see it all around you.
I love the slender mirrors used in some of the bathrooms and the penny tiled wall is wonderful. Back in the early 90' I had a sizable home and the entryway of my front entrance was all penny tile on the floor with flat earth tones and I loved it. And the look!

As for that sea view with the view out those panoramic windows could you imagine waking to that everyday? Geeze the view would be my calm.

Loved seeing all that inspires you, it inspires me as well.

  2. I did that fish embossed dresser detail to a mirror in Lake Placid , I printed out copies of antique fish prints and decoupaged them then did a good dose of lacquer over it. I wish I took a photo way back when of that project. I cant wait to see you do that to a piece of furniture! Love SR too!

  3. I too, love the Sarah Richardson ideas and designs. I miss seeing her on TV as her programs were fantastic. Every one of her rooms were made to live in, not to look at, but enjoy. I especially like her use of the pops of color, her use of antiques with new. Thank you for sharing some of her great remodels.

  4. We are trying to do something similar in our mudroom so I'll be showing this to my husband. So simple and the symmetry .. not as easy to create (everywhere) as one might think, right? When I look at these beautiful spaces it makes me feel like I have so much to do....... love your poetry Michele. Enjoy your day!
