Books: Her {Marjorie Salvaterra}

July 19, 2016

Maybe you will find yourself in Marjorie Salvaterra's
brilliant "Old Venice Wash" lady (above) like I do; maybe not.
Either way, visions of boldly free goddesses
will tickle your amygdala in
Her: Meditations on Being Female
(Glitterati, 2016).

Her Last Supper by Marjorie Salvaterra.

What is inside Her?

Hard earned strength. Wisdom.

I love the photographer's admission she sometimes struggles
to learn God has a bigger plan for her life than she does.
How she understands the importance of letting go
(and shares her short form of the serenity prayer:
TO HELL WITH IT). Ha!

Oh that being female (or human, for that matter)
would more often feel like HER'S
raucous, surreal, beach-blanket-bingo-gone-badass
party with big hair, big heart, and bigger vibe.

For the photos, Salvaterra enlisted wigs and close friends.
She ignites my imagination with Her Last Supper
(in a mausoleum) and other spiritual confetti raining inside HER.

(Roxanne Gay wrote the forward for HER.)

Don't expect sentimentality inside Her where...

Unapologetically imperfect and joyful
feminine bodies in motion are forces
to be reckoned with,
whether they have birthed
another human or not.

Inside
Her: Meditations on Being Female
Salvaterra creates an edgy and provocative
landscape to explore body image,
gender, aging,
faith, and goofing off.

Will you dare to allow this picture book
to become
your book club's next selection?

Peace to you in your divinely imperfect loveliness
at the intersection of time and timeless,
right where you are.

    1. it's edgy and beautiful. the 'meditations' part is really the subjective mystery within the photos which sort of ushers you into deeper thought. thanks for reading, elizabeth.
