32 Ways to Decorate with Stars for Christmas
December 20, 2016
Stars and Christmas decorating are so interconnected,
and as I curated a collection of beautiful images,
these stars of wonder perhaps began to work magic
in my heart as I pondered the significance of the symbol.
After all, we are all made of stardust, oui?
There is solid science behind the assertion,
and, in fact, almost every element on this
big blueberry Earth traces its birth
to the heart of a star.
The heart of a star...can you fathom
the powerful creative capacity
within such a heavenly body?
The star's light is actually the result of
the energy released by nuclear fusion reactions
in a star's heart...these bursts also created the
elements carbon and iron, which make up the
world around us.
And how about the Star of Bethlehem
which has become so closely associated
with much of Christmas tradition?
That star in the dark wintry sky shone so bright
it frightened the shepherds, who were
comforted by an angel:
"Do not be afraid; the star has come to
bring you good, tidings of great joy,
and to show you the place a little
babe is born...and who will give
peace and joy to the whole wide world."
The story goes the great star did not just
flicker and shine but MOVED and LED followers
to a decrepit lowly humble birthplace of a
child who would grow in wisdom and
teach a radical way of peace.
Whether or not you believe stories in the scriptures
literally, whether or not your faith acknowledges
the Christmas story, and whether or not you possess
any faith at all, can we agree there is
something utterly wondrous and holy
about this divine symbol of a shining star,
high in the heavens on a silent night
directing souls below...pointing them
to priceless treasure and hope?
Because my child-like imagination
is brilliantly ignited at the thought
of swirls of combustive gases,
of awesome nuclear fusion fests,
of explosive bright beams,
of a star illumining a dark sky
inviting A L L
(not just Baptists, Buddhists or
Beautiful Agnostics, but A.L.L.)
to lift their eyes,
to gaze with wonder upon
the whole cosmos born of stardust
with its raging potential
for harmony,
for diversity,
for inclusion,
and for
L O V E
in
bold caps.
Because if what I am made of, what you are made of,
what this natural world all around us is made of,
derives from the heart of a star...isn't that truly
S O M E T H I N G
W O N D R O U S
and
L O V E L Y
to celebrate this Christmas?
On with the star show.
