Decor Inspiration: Ideas From IT'S COMPLICATED Movie

The house from the movie "It's Complicated" directed by
Nancy Meyers and starring Meryl Streep, is one of
my all-time favorite cottages, and I have blogged
about it before but am compelled to re-visit
its timeless Belgian style design loveliness.
It's so interesting that Meryl Streep's character
has decided to remodel and expand her beautiful
home, when I am out of my mind with admiration
of its "before" glory.
The style is so Belgian and cozy farmhouse
without feeling contrived or too decorated at all.
I think the reason so many of us are crazy
about it is that it seems so manageable
and achieves a harmonious balance
of liveability and beauty.
Let's go deeper into our analysis.
|
It's more of a narrow French baker's table with
open storage underneath and a few stools
for casual dining...and look at how
pretty some clutter can be!
If you're a fan of European or Belgian style kitchens,
you'll love this curated collection.

but effectively for contrast in the "It's Complicated" kitchen.

all the time and wants her tools within easy reach.
So why am I so adverse to cluttering my worktops with
utensils, graters, and condiments?
|
Brooke Giannetti who uses them brilliantly.
The long oval table is so unique (at least to me),
organic, and understated in its sophistication.
Paired with the warmth of the chairs, I love
how it feels fancy enough for an elegant dinner
yet casually inviting for everyday dining.
It's complicated? I love how the simplicity
of this cottage balances out the many
layers of complexity in the relationships
explored in the film.

Here's a great still from "It's Complicated" allowing
us to view the floorplan better, and isn't this
a lovely way to have open concept living
with abundant architectural interest?
|
is you get a sense of scale for rooms when you see
humans in action in them, and here we can clearly
tell it's a cozy space where you are going
to be rubbing shoulders with the family.

The above offers a rare peek of the high shelf
near the ceiling...loving this idea.

Little kitchen, great big beautiful frig!

be invited to this dinner!
As much as I don't even need to move
on from the "It's Complicated" kitchen,
move on we shall to the living/family room
with its Belgian linen gorgeousness
and casual, effortless design.
|
It's just perfect for conversation, yes?
|
I love the stacked wicker baskets next to the sofa,
and aren't the pops of blue perfect?

|
let's peek at the exterior a bit.

Back inside we go.

This bedside table/desk is so nice and roomy,
and I love the skinny farmhouse bench at
the end of the bed.

I've seen this movie SO many times;) ..love these photos, and that kitchen!!
ReplyDeleteIt's such a timeless sort of story, and I love pressing pause to gaze at the rooms!
DeleteI just want to move in myself!!! Love the detailed looking, thank you for sharing. Did you notice one other item in the kitchen that also shows this kitchen is used by someone who REALLY cooks? The little rolling cart at the end of the marble topped French island. So versitile to move around and use it. I feel I disected the kitchen and house in Something's Gotta Give to death so was happy when this movie came out so I could ohhh and awhhh at this one. The livingroom furnishings are similar. Comfortable, beautiful and grouped so lots of people can sit around to look at a movie or talk yet the room doesn't looked full of furniture. Great style all around. The arched doorways, love the terra cotta floors, spanish tiled room. If it isn't really a house, I will be very disappointed!! Was fun experiencing it again.
ReplyDeleteThat rolling cart...yes! I did the same thing with Something's Gotta Give...hahahaha. Thanks so much for joining the fun. xox

ReplyDeleteSo definitely one of my all time favorites! All the rooms and the property are magically--and her business, the most beautiful bakery, was icing on the gorgeous cake!!! Another most favorite, because of the home's architecture, is "As Good as It Gets," Diane Keaton & Jack Nicholson.
ReplyDeleteoh that bakery was dreamy...we need a blog devoted to movie sets! xox
DeleteI loved that movie and I think it was because of the kitchen! Great post!
