Winter Inspiration: SNOWFLAKES under a microscope

December 15, 2011

Nature is full of genius,
full of the divinity,
so that not a snowflake escapes
its fashioning hand.”

(Henry David Thoreau)

*image above is a REAL snowflake under
an electron microscope*

“You are not a beautiful
and unique snowflake…”

(Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club)

*Not the most cheerful of attitudes, mind you,
but this quote is on my mind as my son
is writing an analysis of this film*

How cool are these perspectives of snowflakes?
Are you believing what your naked eye cannot see?

Patricia Rasmussen (2003)

“Snowflakes are one of
nature’s most fragile things,
but just look at
what they can do
when they stick together.”

(Unknown)

*Ahhhhhh, now there's better food for thought,
and there's something sooooo spiritual in the
idea of snowflakes sticking together.*

December 2010 Blizzard Timelapse from Michael Black.

No perfectly fragile snowflakes here yet, and yet
the spirit of Christmas love can be felt everywhere you turn.

I hope we will soon find ourselves spinning under falling snow,
catching a few flakes on the tongue, and seeing,
REALLY SEEING
snowflakes for what they are...

lovely and so masterfully made!

Is the wonder of these crystals dancing through earth's atmosphere
still alive in your heart?

Peace to you right where you are.

  2. I had a blog friend who
    lost her mother this fall
and I sent her a necklace
    with a sparkly snowflake
    charm, to help her remember
    the unique person her mom
    was. I chose this symbol
    because every snowflake is
    entirely unique and its pattern
    is never exactly repeated.....
just like people : ) Gorgeous
    images and food for thought,
    as I see teensy-tiny flakes
    fluttering outside my window.
    Our ground is snow-less with
    nothing major in the forecast,
    though!

  12. The most perfect post EVER!!! I love these images... I've seen these before, but it has been a long time! Thanks for bringing these beauties to my attention. When you look at miracles like these - how can anyone deny there is a God.

    Lots of love to you!

  13. Amazing, they look like they are somehow trying to show us what the 4th dimension might reveal. In the movie, "What the bleep do we know"... there was a part about how water crystals change if you sing or project beautiful thoughts over them, and become all fractured and chaotic if you project ugly negative thoughts over them. I'm not explaining it very well, but this reminded me of that... it was phenomenal, but rang so true...
One day remnd me to tell you about my carrot experiment...

    lovin you

  14. C.R.A.Z.Y. And it's so lovely. I wish we had electronic eyes now.

Oh and Fight Club. One of my favorites. I would quote Chuck here then, since you started:

"If I could wake up at a different time, in a different place, could I wake up as a different person". Only, could I wake up with electronic eyes!!!

    So lovely.

  17. Lol. I think it's great how amazed we all are by these images. They are truly amazing. It's incredible that this is what snowflakes look like under the microscope. They're so beautiful that they almost don't seem real.
