Artist Inspiration: 1970s Selfies {Stevie Nicks}

October 17, 2015

Stevie Nicks self-portrait

In 1975, if you were a rockstar with insomnia,
you might rise in the middle of the night,
style yourself pretty,
grab your Polaroid (with cord for self-portraits)
and practice photography.

But you probably didn't unless you were Stevie Nicks.

She never meant for the photos to be seen,
but they became an exhibit called 24 Karat Gold,
(curated by guitarist Dave Stewart)
with a new album from Nicks of songs
she wrote between 1969 and 1987.

It's not fair to call these 'early selfies' because
they are incredible art pieces created
with a simple camera and a masterful eye.

Hope you enjoyed the trip back in time!

Peace to you right where you are.

  2. Hi Michele, I channeled her, went to her day on the Green concert in Northern Calif. I dressed like her, yes! I did, platform knee high boots, zig zag hems on dresses shear an flow-ie!
Had hair like her, before we could easily straighten it like now!
Listened to Rhiannon over and over and danced about.

Did we not all want to be her, and throw scarves about our rooms draping them over everything?
    Those were the days.
Now that you stirred up the 70's memories here I kind of want to go back :)

Really amazing foto's .... I so remember taking the same kind of mysterious foto's of myself, nothing like the instant viewing of a selfie with a Polaroid.

See you soon Michele, come to think of it, I bet you channeled her as well, I see the free spirit in you ever since your dancing through your home you tube.

    Xoxo

    1. How fun is that memory of you stylin it like Stevie! I did love the 70s. I had the long stick straight hair like Jan Brady and the white vinyl go go boots and psychedelic minis. My mom was a very young mama so I remember all her groovy fashion too. I love the unique combo of edge and strength and feminists and gypsy that this woman rocks so effortlessly. AND the fact she is a songwriter and not just a performer. Thanks for the fun comments, friend.

  3. Stevie Nicks is one a kind, always has been and always will be! My parents divorced in 1979, most of my friends had never even heard of divorce so it as a very lonely thing to go through as a child, but I can so vividly remember my mom lying on the living room floor listening to the song Sara over and over during that time. I still get very melancholy when I hear that song.
