The Fixer Upper's New Barn Door + 14 Inspiring Doors
March 21, 2017
Sliding barn doors are hot hot hot
right now yet hardly a trendy design item
since they have been employed
consistently in design for years and years.
I think we can safely crown them
a timeless country decor staple.

I'm crazy about modern farmhouse style
and do love me a well-constructed barn door
that's rustic but won't give me a splinter.
(I know many of you prefer invisible pocket
doors for their understated function, but we
have not had the loveliest experiences with pocket
doors...they are not always DIY friendly
and can be awkward and heavy to use daily.)
You may recall we resorted to building our own
barn doors about 8 years ago in our previous
home where we finished the basement
ourselves and required huge custom planked doors
for doorways we wanted to keep nice and wide.

At the time, it was nearly impossible to
find interior barn door hardware in stores.
Here at the fixer upper, we knew we needed
a solution for the entrance to the lower level
media room where (1) noise can be a factor
and where (2) we desperately needed
some architectural interest and (3) wanted
to use natural materials.
The media room has no windows, exposure, or style
making it the all-time very worst room to
photograph or blog about at this juncture.
But you have to start somewhere, right?
And this door was the perfect launching point
for addressing the room.
What you are seeing is a typical lower level
finished basement which had no redeeming
qualities until this beauty came into her life.

Pacific Entries offers this wood barn door in 2 widths,
and we chose an unfinished 42" wide door.
You can choose from various finishes and styles
including prefinished white shaker (so pretty!)
and we stayed with unfinished like the rest
And just a reminder that if knotty
seems to rustic for your room,
but you like the look of vintage,
these doors can always be customized
with paint, and after doing just that
to the inside of my knotty alder bathroom
door...I'm a a huge fan.
As soon as my DIYhandsome husband
installed it (easy peasy and positively no hitches),
I think we both sighed with relief because
it is gorgeous and resolves our issues.
I snapped several close-ups so you are able
to sense the quality and craftsmanship, and
having built these in the past,
we think the price point (around $450 for a 36")
is well worth it considering the quality.

Other helpful info:
We added an additional board to the bottom
of the door to correct for our height requirement,
and we used a piece of reclaimed wood as a header

your application likely won't require.

We have a small office niche which is open most of the time, but this beautiful door looks like a great solution for times you want to hide the inner workings of the household. It's great looking open and shut! BTW, I read "The Little Tern" and loved the message working hard on believing in all good things, especially my own strength and abilities. Thank you for mentioning it.
ReplyDeleteexactly! and this sort of door is quiet which i love. i'm so moved that you read that book--it is so close to my heart and came to me at a very tender time and taught me about shadows and how i ought to honor the shadow side of my life. xox
