Decor Inspiration: 44 Friggin Fabulous Ken Fulk Moments
January 19, 2017
Shall we describe this decor inspiration from Ken Fulk
as eclectic interior design? It's such a glorious
fusion of funky interior design magic, I can't decide.
He is Ken Fulk:
as eclectic interior design? It's such a glorious
fusion of funky interior design magic, I can't decide.
He is Ken Fulk:
the life of the party, handsome, and
wildly successful at what he seems
wildly successful at what he seems
born to do...artfully make dreams come true
by pushing his imagination to the extreme.
I could fill pages with juicy words on that theme,
but for now let's narrow our scope to Ken Fulk's
ability to lavish interiors with
ability to lavish interiors with
personality and envision each,
from start to finish,
as a movie.
HOW FUN IS freakin filmspiration, FRIENDS?
I shined the spotlight on Fulk's design of a
and those pinworthy images
(though they are rooms
decorated for Christmas!)
are still circulating fast and furious!
Who can resist mentioning the vibrant party of
adjectives associated with a Ken Fulk project's
dreamy budget and limitless creativity?
Genius
Luxurious
Off-beat
Stratospheric
Sensual
Transportive
Experiential
Over the top
Mysterious
Daring
Theatrical
Elegant
Exuberant
Lively
Extravagant
Dramatic
Theatrical
But wanna know my favorite aspect of
what makes this creative soul tick?
Sense of humor.
Sense of humor!
The design world can be so stuffy, oui?
So much arrogance, so many rules.
So much:
"Who in their right mind puts THAT with THAT!?!
Ya know?
How utterly refreshing to watch a mysterious dream maker
from rural Virginia (with more style and humor
than formal training in design)
handsomely ascend with a wink.
I lied.
There's another aspect I find swell.
Fulk is not in Kylie Jenner's peer group...
he's the same age as me!
You just KNOW things at this age
you cannot know earlier.
Like how a rich imagination
plus fearlessness equals GOLD.
Or how Stevie Nicks is the bombdiggityfreshest.
Or how Stevie Nicks is the bombdiggityfreshest.
Incorporated into much of the designs you'll see here:
Contemporary Art
Antiques
Taxidermy
But you may be surprised to also find moments
of timeless tranquility, to which we bretheren
of LovelyLand favor so passionately.
Where does the planner of over-the-top events
and parties as an architect of dreams hail from?
and parties as an architect of dreams hail from?
Fulk is from Virginia, and here's a peek
into his past (from SFGate):
into his past (from SFGate):
"At 6, he picked his own preppy suits. At 8, he picked his mother’s dresses. As a teen, he participated in high school theater. 'I liked the transportive nature of it — of taking people to other places,' he said. "
Isn't that what the best parties and events do?
They disarm us and awaken all of
our senses so we feel fully alive.
Although he was on track to become a lawyer,
studying English and history in college, he started
a textile company in Boston instead.
This work led to a line of children's linens
and pajamas called Doodlezoo.
It was after moving to San Francisco and selling
his share of the textile company that Fulk
embarked upon a career as a decorator in 1997.
Since then, he has continued to create, design, style,
stage, plan events, and..um...
we're nahhhhhhhht talking typical events or clients.
These parties are for high profile types.
Fulk planned the elaborate Big Sur wedding of Sean Parker
(Napster co-founder), who likened him to
Frank Lloyd Wright and dubbed him
"the greatest living genius of interior design
and architecture." (SF Gate)
One of Fulk's quotes about SAYING YES
in a story by 7x7's Leilani Marie Labong
was inspiring enough to compel
me to get-my-PicMonkey-on*
and create this graphic:
*if you have not a clue what getting your picmonkey on is,
i'll explain later.
i'll explain later.
PIN ME...I'm inspiring. |
Saying YES even before you can fully understand
or integrate a fresh beginning into your
current vocabulary takes courage,
and I bet you'll taste that flavor
of daring in the
moments that follow.
Onward, then.
