Decor Inspiration: Eclectic Paris Apartment {Stefano Pilati}
January 01, 2017Decor Inspiration: Paris apartment of Stefano Pilati |
We toured fashion designer Stefano Pilati's Paris apartment years ago, but sweet mama on a macaron, a rerun from Architectural Digest showed up in my inbox tonight
and wrecked me with deja voodoo photos of Pilati's impossibly-wondrous-sexy home photographed by Bjorn Wallander.
(My archived Pilati post has vanished, but I bet some of you
remember it since it was irreverently titled
I WANT BEPI'S PAD...
Bepi being Pilati's lucky white boxer,
and I think I wrote about the apartment from
the adorable Bepi's perspective.)
A few years back, I also shared the image below
by photographer Ivan Terestchenko of Pilati's' gym
when I reviewed the fabulous Beyond Chic.
This surfboard is my idea of gnarly von gnarly eclectic sculpture. |
Stefano Pilati is the former creative director of
Ermenegildo Zegna
and initially rented the apartment (just 'round the corner
from The Élysée Palace where M. French President resides)
a few years before buying and transforming it
with architect Bruno Caron.
I remember reading the designer's decision to buy this
place was largely based on the needs of his beloved
Bepi to have private garden space to roam!
What a devoted dog lover, oui?
Speaking of that garden for Bepi...it was landscaped by
seulement le meilleur (only the best!)... Louis Benech,
who helped to restore Tuileries Garden!
Here are a few of my own photos of Tuileries:
My photo of my beloved snapping a pic in the garden |
on the north side is this statue
placed in the garden in the 19th century.
My photo of Le Centaur Nessus enlevant Dėjanire (The centaur Nessus carrying off Dejanire) by Laurent Honoré Marqueste - 1892 |
Back to Stefano Pilati's magnificent home.
This Paris dining room overlooks the garden, landscaped by Louis Benech. Vintage Lalique glassware, Elsa Peretti crystal candlesticks, vintage Gio Ponti armchairs |
Paris apartment, with its mural of an autumnal
woodland by artists Mathias Kiss and Olivier Piel.
The inspiration for it? This made me giggle:
a scene from Reese Witherspoon's Vanity Fair!
Reese Witherspoon |
How tres cool is it that Pilati asked the artists to leave
the landscape mural unfinished so it wouldn't
"seem too retro or old-school?"
...I'd love to keep blogging but I am suddenly overcome,
undone, and insanely compelled to click over
to Nordstrom for fuchsia socks...who is joining me?
and how interesting is this wall color
in the living room?
I so admire the fashion designer's philosophy in designing
the interiors of this amazing property:

Je suis désolé.
How unique are Pilati's collections, and how interesting is this wall color
in the living room?
I so admire the fashion designer's philosophy in designing
the interiors of this amazing property:
Art in living room by Giorgio de Chirico, Henry Moore, Rosemarie Trockel, and Sonia Delaunay. The unique ceiling fixture is made from sconces by Charlotte Perriand. |
A collection of African masks and a mangrove-root side table found at Marche Paul Bert. |
This is Pilati's TV room with Louis XVI desk, Thonet wood chair, and Robert Doisneau photograph of Pablo Picasso. |
Just your typical media room (above)...NOT.
Let's peek inside this sophisticated Paris kitchen
and tour more rooms...
The kitchen floor is paved with leather tiles. |
In Pilati's office, walls are covered with painter's canvas. Vintage Olivetti desk, Martino Gamper designed chest, Beni Ourain carpet. |
The Italian painting above the platform bed is 18th century, floor lamp is 1950s, vicuna blanket is by Agnona, and the LOVE pillow was a gift from Kate Moss. |
This bedroom is so personal and so artfully beautiful.
The painting above the bed was a gift from Pilati's mother.
In the master bedroom, photographs by Jeff Burton, Henrik Kerstens portrait, and silk and leather shag rug by Pilati. |
The color on the walls feels like liquid serenity.
Open shelving separates the bedroom from the smoking room |
A smoking room because...
everything coordinated around
his way of living, oui?
There's a bold beauty in such a freespirited approach
to design...here in suburbia bourgeoisie land, we are all
"For resale, I'm thinkin' the canvas paneled walls
will not go over well with future buyers..."
Ya know?
What would it feel like to GO BOLD, GO PILATI,
mixing finishes, furniture, time periods, and colors?
This staircase leads from the master bedroom down to a dressing area and bath, chair is Ignazio Gardella...notice the velvet upholstered paneling! |
The master bath with Lefroy Brooks fittings. |
The bathroom with its warm honey
tones is so elegant and clever.
The sculptural shower fixture is custom.
Carved-stone seashell sconces designed by Pilati. |
After touring this magnificently decorated
Paris apartment with eclectic decor,
I am going to lower myself back down to earth.
Back to the humble fixer upper sans Lefroy Brooks fittings
which is progressing nicely with the installation
of upgraded doors and rustic reclaimed wood
planked wall...it may not possess the chic
of a priceless palatial Paris apartment,
but as we begin adding finishing touches and
decor, we can perhaps tap into some design freedom
from which this apartment took shape...and so can you.
And dang. Lucky Bepi.
Bepi! |
Happy New Year, friends!
Peace to you right where you are.
