When we added plantation shutters to our master bath,
it was our first experience with this cottage style
window treatment, and I've gotta say...I'm S O L D!
I love em.
The shutters were a breeze to install and
the perfect functional window cover for privacy.
They added instant architectural interest in one fell swoop.

A few of you emailed me when I shared
our master bath reveal and expressed
trepidation about messing up the measurements
and pulling the trigger on the decision to have
plantation shutters installed, and I would encourage
you to go for it, since if I can be trusted with the
measuring and ordering, oh lordy, you can definitely handle it!
Here are some basic ideas to get you started
on the plantation shutters planning.
1. Decide on Framing.
Full shutters or café shutters?
2. Decide on Dividing Rail.
3. Decide on Mounting of Plantation Shutters.
Inside or outside of window opening?
We opted for outside mount for the
window in our bath.

4. Decide on front tilting or hidden/rear tilt.
5. Louver Sizes?
Larger louvers provide a clearer view, but for small
windows, smaller louvers will look proportionate.

6. Find a reputable company offering great options...
I found Barb at Riverwood Shutters, and she
was wonderful to work with, building us
plantation shutters that we installed
without a hitch.

We do have several rooms with Plantation shutters since we live in the South where they are very popular. I do like them in certain rooms. Ours are 3.5" and I highly recommend the hidden rail to open/shut them. I prefer solid interior shutters over the louvered kind in public rooms such as dining, living, family and louvered for more private rooms like baths and bedrooms. Most importantly of all is the kind of wood they are made out of. The harder the wood the better, not Balsa like making a toy derby car. Be very specific about the wood even if it costs more -- better in the long run and better resale value.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this important info, Colleen. I'm just getting started and know there are more plantation shutters in my future! :)
